The City of Chicago has issued permits for a new residential project at 855 West Lill Avenue in Wrightwood Neighbors. Plans were submitted to the city on February 26, and the project was approved on March 1. When complete, the three-story building, which has been designed by Helen Liptak, will boast three dwelling units and a private roof deck.
Beyond a roof deck, the property plans to feature first-floor rear decks, second- and third-floor front balconies, and a detached four-car garage equipped with a roof deck and pergolas. General Masonry LLC is taking charge of general contracting and masonry work.
Owned by 855 Aniela LLC, the project has an estimated budget of $1,234,720. When complete, it will be located a short walk from bus service for Routes 8, 37, and 74. Beyond that, the Fullerton CTA Station, which services the Brown, Purple, and Red Lines, will also be a short walk from the property.

  1. the loss of another fine Chicago historical structure to a cheezy characterless box with no architectural details, no meaning.

    • It gets even worse if you google Helen Liptak and her portfolio of “work.” You might not wanna view it while eating as it may induce vomiting.

  2. This isn’t just losing an old and beautiful Chicago 3 flat. this lot also has a 3 story accessory dwelling unit in the back. We’re actually seeing a density decrease here to replace a nice looking old building with an urban mansion. my eyes are rolling so hard but also it’s lincoln park so what am I expecting

As the most recent tenet, this is absolutely devastating to me. It was such a beautiful, historic building and seeing it torn down to be replaced by a gentrified piece of trash is beyond upsetting.

  3. This is insanity. How is this even allowed? There needs to be more protections put in place for historical buildings like this. I mean this is just gross.

  4. I suggest everyone write to alderman Tom Knudsen at yourvoice@ward43.org. You can also call 773-348-9500. I wrote to them recently to discuss all the destruction I’ve seen in the past few months and how it’s been noticeable uptick since he’s taken over for Michele Smith. I asked them to consider downzoning or at establish a larger historic district.

A handy list you can reference in your email:
    1. The threat to 2308, 2310, 2314 and 2316 N. Sheffield Ave by DePaul University
    2. 2218 N Burling
    3. 2240 N. Burling St
    4. 855 W Lill

  5. If you can find the 4 minutes of time, I would highly recommend everyone email Tom Knudsen at yourvoice@ward43.org. You can also call 773-348-9500. 6. Criminal . The alderman needs to intervene and block this stupid plan .

  7. The alderman is Tim Knudsen. At a candidate forum in the 2023 election, he said Chicago needs more street parking to help businesses. There is no way he tries to stop this.

    • We should all write to him and give him a piece of our mind! I just wrote to him at yourvoice@ward43.org . Let him know you don’t like this, or 2218 N Burling, or 2240 N Hurling, or 230, 21314, and 2316 Sheffield all being demolished.

I’ve noticed a signifiant uptick in teardowns since Michele Smith left office. She would downzone thing all the time to punish developers. This Tim guy seems like a real schmuck

This is so messed up! This is a beautiful building and every single person involved with tearing this down should be ashamed of themselves!

  9. Everyone should email the alderman and ask what’s going on in the district. It’s too much to bear. I wrote them today asking for a historic designation to be expanded and for him to be more aggressive with downzoning sites that developers get greedy on like Michele Smith used to do. A list below:

    1. The threat to 2308, 2310, 2314 and 2316 N. Sheffield Ave by DePaul University

    2. 2218 N Burling

    • let me know if you need their email address but it is google-able. Every time I paste it here my comment gets “moderated”

  10. Why was this travesty approved? All responsible parties should be ashamed of themselves for destroying even more of our city’s precious architectural heritage and replacing it with boring ugly boxes that exist in boring ugly cities across the land.

  11. As a tenant that had to move out due to the sale, the new owners have also been dragging with returning security deposits. We all vacated between December 2023-Jan 2024.
