A groundbreaking has been held for a new community center at 4000 S Archer Avenue in Brighton Park. Located just east of the intersection with S California Avenue, the center will replace a vacant lot near Kelly Edward Park. The center will serve as the new headquarters for the Brighton Park Neighborhood Network (BPNN), who is also building the facility which was designed by local architecture firm JGMA.

BPNN is a coalition of over 65 community groups dedicated to providing comprehensive support for locals through violence prevention, health, and education. Started by its parent organization the Brighton Park Neighborhood Council which has been serving the area for over 20 years now. Once completed, all of BPNN’s scheduled programs will run out of the same roof, though other existing events and programs will continue within local schools.

Rising three-stories tall with a bright multi-colored facade with a gradient similar to JGMA’s Pioneros proposal, the center will welcome guests with a comic book-like mural that wraps from the outside in. Inside will be a large multi-purpose community room, an art room, a health clinic operated by Centro Sanar, conference rooms and spaces for PODER Works, which focuses on workforce training, and Beyond Legal Aid.

The multi-colored interior and partnerships will help deliver culturally-affirming services and a sense of community connectedness according to BPNN’s site. The groundbreaking is a major step for the $8.7 million project which has collected around 80-percent of its funding already. The center will now take roughly 15-months to build with Blackwood Construction serving as the contractor, with an announced Summer 2025 opening date.
