The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) is nearing the completion of its new Computer Design Research and Learning Center, located at 900 W Taylor Street in the Little Italy neighborhood. The center, a 135,000-square-foot facility, is designed to support UIC’s computer science education and research. This five-story building is an addition to the existing Science and Engineering Labs building, connecting old and new architectural elements.
The facility includes 16,000 square feet of classroom space, 35 laboratories, administrative offices, and a high-tech robotics lab. Additionally, the center features a large terrace on the third floor for community use and a full-height atrium designed to enhance natural light and connect the new and existing structures.
Architecturally, the center is a collaboration between Booth Hansen and LMN Architects, based in Seattle. It features a contemporary design with a facade of wide, recessed windows, terracotta detailing, and concrete paneling.
In terms of accessibility, the center is located near the UIC-Halsted station of the CTA L Blue Line, approximately a nine-minute walk north. It is also accessible by several bus routes, with the 900 W Taylor Street junction serving Route 157 and nearby stops for Routes 8 and 12.
The project, with a budget of $125 million, is led by W.E. O’Neil Construction as the principal contractor, with Duco Cement Construction handling the concrete work. The center is slated to open later this year.
