Construction is quickly advancing for the Chicago Fire Football Club’s new 30-acre training facility at 1434 S Loomis Street in the Near West Side. Designed by Crawford Architects, this 30-acre project will revitalize a mostly unused part of Addams/Medill Park, a site where four CHA complexes once stood until 2007.

The main building will be a two-story performance center spanning 53,000 square feet. The facility will allow team members to prepare for matches while also housing the new Chicago Fire Youth Academy, which focuses on providing sports training and developmental skills for children from low-income areas. Inside will be a large gym, locker rooms, medical spaces, a hydrotherapy room, a cafeteria, and team offices. The design features a glass and white panel exterior with an extended overhanging roof.

The larger area of the complex will feature a total of five and a half soccer fields, comprising three fields with artificial turf and two and a half fields with hybrid grass. For seasonal use, a dome will cover one of the synthetic fields from November through March. Additional elements of the site include a pathway for pedestrians, surface parking for 150 vehicles, as well as new landscaping and lighting.

Also included in the project is a 4,100-square-foot facility for maintenance and field operations, which will be connected to the existing fields and the recreation center at the park’s southern end. A portion of the project’s funding is dedicated to upgrading nearby CHA homes, while there is also consideration for turning the leftover unused parkland into affordable housing. Pepper Construction is in charge of constructing this new complex as general contractor, with an expected opening in 2024.
