Excavation is now underway for a 12-story apartment building at 1630 South Wabash Avenue in South Loop. This residential development, undertaken by CMK Companies, will house a total of 149 rental units. The building will be located on a previously vacant lot just east of the elevated CTA tracks. Its foundation and partial superstructure received a permit in late October, while the full construction permit is still pending.
Pappageorge Haymes is the architect of record. However, specific plans or renderings have not yet been revealed, due to the as-of-right nature of the project.
The garage will include 105 parking spaces distributed over the first two floors. Regarding transit access, bus service for Routes 1, 3, 4, 12, 29, and 62 are all within a five-minute walk. As for the nearest CTA stations, the Green Line’s Cermak-McCormick Place station is an 11-minute walk south, the Red Line at Cermak-Chinatown station is a 12-minute walk southwest, and Roosevelt station, serving the Red, Orange, and Green Lines, can be reached within a 15-minute walk north.
With Clark Construction as the general contractor, this current phase of the work has a reported cost of $17 million. No completion date has yet been announced.
