Extensive Metra infrastructure work continues to progress for the Metra in Old Irving Park, aiming for completion in spring 2024, despite delays. A stretch of Milwaukee Avenue by its intersection with Kilbourn has been closed off to support the construction efforts for the railway’s overpass replacement and Grayland Station overhaul. Initially set to conclude in 2022, this closure has been prolonged to prioritize safety and facilitate project efficiency.

The initiative seeks to replace a 122-year-old railroad bridge showing signs of deterioration. In tandem, the neighboring Grayland Station is undergoing various upgrades, including extending platforms, introducing new equipment, improved lighting, and adding ramps for accessibility.

According to an earlier article by Block Club Chicago, funding for this endeavor comes from various sources. The Federal Transit Administration has provided $13.1 million, the Federal Railroad Administration $17.8 million, Canadian Pacific $2.3 million, and other Metra associates tallying at $2.9 million.

To manage the closure, all vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists have been redirected to Addison Street, with new concrete barriers, markers, signs to indicate this temporary detour. As the work begins to wrap up next year, new bike barriers will integrated underneath the bridge section of Milwaukee, provided by Metra.
