A construction permit has been approved for a new transit development at 611 W 79th Street, in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood. The project, owned by Metra, involves constructing a new two-story Metra station that will integrate with the Rock Island Line.
Carol Ross Barney from Ross Barney Architects is heading the project’s architectural design. The entrance, integrated into an existing embankment wall, will guide commuters to the station house platform at the embankment’s summit. An additional commercial building will be constructed at grade level for future tenants/vendors.
The details of the parking provisions have not been clarified in the permit details. The new facility will have easy access to other public transit access points, such as Routes 8A and 79 at the adjacent intersection of 79th Street & Lowe. Meanwhile, the nearest CTA Red Line station is 79th via a 16-minute walk east.
John Burns Construction Company is the general contractor for the project, and the reported construction cost is approximately $28,190,000. A previous article by Block Club Chicago noted that the total cost will be $35 million with construction wrapping up by next year.

The render seems to be showing a lot of bridge work over 79th, compared to google maps. Is that true or just render porn?
I remember bridge work being necessary for the project. I think they were going to raise it a bit. I’m not sure if that’s meant to include the detailing in the rendering, however.
If John Burns works at the speed that they are building the Edgewater station, this won’t be completed until 2026.
