The superstructure has reached its full 350-foot height for 1400 S Wabash Avenue in South Loop, where CMK Companies is developing a 30-story apartment tower. Replacing a long-vacant former parking lot, the tower will help bolster the outer edge of South Loop’s skyline while adding 350 new residences to the area. There will also be a retail component with storefront along Wabash Avenue. The residential lobby, meanwhile, will be located around the corner along a new driveway extending off of 14th street.

The apartments will offer a range of sizes from one to three bedrooms, with select units having the added bonus of private terraces located on the podium. Of the entire pool of apartments, eight will be affordable housing and located on premises while another 22 are subsidized offsite. Residents will have access to multiple amenities, including a top-floor lounge and an open-air rooftop terrace.

Pappageorge Haymes designed the building’s facade to be made up of interlocking rectangles. As seen in recent photos, these rectangular components are outlined with metal paneling and will either jut out or recede from view – adding contrast and texture to the exterior pattern.

For those who drive, there are 105 parking spots located onsite as well as 180 spaces in an integrated bike room. Access to the project site is just a short walk from bus service for Routes 1, 3, 4, 12, 29, and 62 as well Roosevelt station for the Red, Green, and Orange Lines of CTA.

Lendlease is leading the $100 million construction as the general contractor, while Pepper Construction is serving as the concrete contractor. Work is expected to wrap up by this coming spring.
