More funding has been secured to aid efforts for a development that will convert an existing church into affordable housing at 2122 N Mozart Street in the Logan Square neighborhood. This project comes by way of LUCHA, a nonprofit developer and this new round of funding is federally sponsored. LUCHA is one of 10 developers and community organizations awarded funding from Congress and is reportedly receiving $2 million in federal funds to convert a Humboldt Park Methodist Church into affordable apartments. According to a news release, LUCHA was able to secure this funding with support from Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García.
The scope of this development involves utilizing funds to convert the nearly 100-year-old church into 22 affordable dwelling units from the former complex. This project aims to combat some of the effects of displacement due to rising costs in Logan Square. The church is already home to 12 affordable apartments managed by the congregation. This development seeks to expand upon the existing framework with very few changes to the external facade. Plans indicate a mix of studios and one-, two-, and three-bedroom units which would only be available to renters who qualify under the Affordable Requirements Ordinance.
The funding is a big step forward on the project, which has been gaining momentum since its approval by the Chicago City Council in December 2020. The project will need a total of $11 million to be realized.
