Exterior walls have begun installation at The Gateway Apartments, an 11-story mixed-use building that recently topped out in the Illinois Medical District. Located at 2050 W Ogden Avenue, the project is set to yield 161 rental units atop ground-level retail. Of these apartments, 17 will be designated as affordable and target toward union workers such as nurses, healthcare technicians, healthcare workers, and firefighters.
Unit sizes will be laid out from studios up to two-bedrooms, accompanied by amenities such as a rooftop pool and lounge, additional indoor lounge areas, a fitness room, a game room, a business center, and bike storage.
Piekarz Associates is responsible for the design, which is made up of glass, aluminum composite paneling, and recessed balconies. There will be a prominent rooftop enclosure with an attached trellis around the rooftop deck. Meanwhile, at the ground retail floor will be an open glass storefront with dark metal trimming.
The edifice is part of a larger masterplan known as The Gateway, for which East Lake Management & Development is the developer alongside AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust as a financial partner. This 10-acre undertaking also includes a pair low-rise of retail buildings, as well as an upcoming six-story hotel.
Residents, tenants, and patrons will find various bus transit in the vicinity, such as Route 50 less than a minute’s walk northeast to Damen & Ogden. Also within a five-minute walk are Routes 7 and 126 to the northeast, as well as Routes 12 and 157 to the south. Anyone looking to board the CTA will be able to choose from either the Blue Line via a seven-minute walk northeast to IMD station, or the Pink Line via a nine-minute walk east to Polk station.
Any residents working in a healthcare-related field will find both the John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital and Jesse Brown VA Medical Center within paces of the property, while both the UI Health Campus and Rush University Medical Center are within a 10-minute walk.
The current $50 million construction is being carried out by Global Builders Inc as the general contractor. Details regarding a target completion date have not been revealed. Nearby at the six-story hotel site, foundation work had been carried out, though full timeline details for this next phase are also unknown.
