The Department of Planning and Development (DPD) has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the former 3rd Ward Streets and Sanitation office at 5021 S Wabash Avenue in Grand Boulevard. Located along S Wabash Avenue, the project site is between E 50th Street and E 51st Street.
The 11,800-square-foot development site holds a one-story, city-owned building that dates to the 1910s. The target sales price for the city is $90,000, based on a December 2020 appraisal. The prairie-style structure has an orange rating on the Chicago Historical Resources Survey and could be eligible for a landmark designation. Respondents of the RFP are expected to seek rehabilitation of the existing building.
The City of Chicago could assist in the development through Tax Increment Financing support, Neighborhood Opportunity Fund grants, purchase-price write-downs, and other resources.
The deadline for responses is the end of June 2021. A winning project team is expected to be announced by DPD later this year. A formal review and approval process will follow, including potential hearings with the Chicago Plan Commission, the Community Development Commission and Chicago City Council.
