Foundation Work Well Underway at UI Health Outpatient Surgery Center in Illinois Medical District

Foundation work is progressing rapidly at University of Illinois (UI) Health’s new Outpatient Surgery Center and Specialty Clinics building, located in the Illinois Medical District. The six-story community facility from University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) will offer 200,000 square feet of new patient care space, including facilities for preventative and diagnostic care/imaging, minimally invasive outpatient procedures, and transplant surgeries.

The Health Outpatient Surgery Center and Specialty Clinics building will house a total of eight operating rooms and eight procedure rooms, as well as 48 pre- and post-surgery bays. The additional clinic space will service the Gastroenterology (GI), Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology (ENT), Transplant, Urology, and Pharmacy Services specialties.

Architecture firms Shive-Hattery and ZGF are responsible for the development’s contemporary design, which features a glass curtain wall with textured masonry panels of varying widths. Other elements include an angled lobby entryway and a two-story pedestrian bridge connecting the second and third floors to the adjacent main UIC Hospital building.

Patients, clinicians, staff, and visitors will have nearby access to bus Route 157, located a two-minute walk east to Taylor & Paulina. Route 12 and 9 are also located within a five-minute walking radius. CTA L service includes the Pink Line’s Polk station, which can be found via a five-minute walk northeast. Those wishing to access the Blue Line can find service at Illinois Medical District station, a 15-minute walk northwest.

FH Paschen is the general contractor for the $194 million structure, $10 million of which is funded via a gift by Bruno and Sallie Pasquinelli. A completion and opening date is planned for fall 2022.
