Construction has reached the fifth and final floor at Rauner Family Veteran Studios, located at 2908 W Roosevelt Road in North Lawndale. Spearheaded by A Safe Haven Foundation in partnership with KMA Companies and the City of Chicago, the residential development will contain 90 efficiency residences primarily designated for veterans.

According to an April article in Yahoo Life, 75 of these units will be reserved as permanent housing for Veteran Affairs Supportive voucher recipients. Of the remaining 15 units, 14 will be set aside as subsidized housing by the Chicago Low Income Trust Fund, while one unit will be market rate.

The project qualifies for $20 million in Federal HUD/VASH funding, and is partially subsidized through the Illinois Housing and Community Development Authority. A final source of funding is a $1 million gift from former Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner and his wife Diana Rauner.

Multiple features and amenities throughout the building include fully-furnished apartments, a common meeting/community space, an exercise room, a computer room, a lounge, a rooftop garden, and an outdoor landscaped area with a gazebo. The development also overlooks the 162-acre Douglas Park located just across W Roosevelt Road. Additional on-site components include 26 designated surface parking stalls, as well as a bike storage structure.

Robert E. Natke of UrbanWorks is the project’s architect of record. The design features a contemporary gray-scale facade with intermittent wooden paneling.

Nearby transportation includes east and westbound stops for Route 12, located adjacent to the site at Roosevelt & Francisco. Additional routes include the 94 bus located a three-minute walk east to California & Roosevelt, as well as the 52 bus located an eight-minute walk west to Kedzie & Roosevelt. The nearest CTA L access is the Blue Line, an 18-minute walk northwest to Kedzie-Homan station. Meanwhile, the Pink Line’s California station is accessible via a 20-minute walk southeast.

GMA Construction Group is serving as general contractor for the project, which is expected to open in spring 2021.
