Construction has broken ground on Evanston Senior Housing at 1011 W Howard Street in Evanston. Located along W Howard Street, the development is near restaurants and shops as well as several buses, including Routes 97, 206, and 215, which connect to the Howard CTA L station, serviced by the Purple, Yellow, and Red Lines. Evergreen Real Estate Group and CJE SeniorLife are in charge of the development.

Designed by UrbanWorks, the $25 million project will comprise a four-story, 73,000-square-foot residential building, holding 60 units of affordable rental housing. The apartments will be located on floors two through four. Common areas will include a community room, fitness room, laundry room, an outdoor terrace, and lounge areas on each floor.

Operated by Evergreen’s in-house management team, Evanston Senior Housing will offer 54 one-bedroom and six two-bedroom independent living apartments for seniors age 62 or older, with incomes at or below 60 percent of the Area Median Income. Evergreen will begin accepting applications for the apartments next spring.

The new structure will showcase a modern, contemporary look with a white concrete exterior and tan accents. The building’s open lobby will feature floor-to-ceiling windows along W Howard Street, while the entrance and an adjacent courtyard will house a mural by a local Evanston artist to be selected through a community process.

The new building is adjacent to the existing CJE SeniorLife Adult Day Services center, currently undergoing renovations. The improvements include a lobby reconfiguration to enhance security and overall functionality, HVAC upgrades, and roof and masonry work.

The building features a precast concrete frame and two levels of parking, allowing the building to complement the enhanced streetscape coming to Howard Street in 2021.
