One Chicago East Tower Races Towards Completion At Second Place In Countdown

Claiming the second place in the Chicago YIMBY 2021 countdown is the east tower of One Chicago, which tops out at 971 feet tall in River North. Part of One Chicago’s two-building complex is the west tower which claimed the sixth place in the countdown, the structures replaced a parking lot that once belonged to the Holy Name Cathedral across the street. Developer JDL teamed up with Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture and Goettsch Partners on the Art Deco-inspired skyscraper which also claims the eighth tallest spot in the skyline per CTBUH.

Crane Down, Glass Up at JDL’s One Chicago

Since YIMBY’s construction tour of One Chicago in July, the tower crane has been disassembled and the parapet completed for the taller east tower of the massive two-tower development in River North. The aforementioned near-supertall stands 76 stories and 971 feet, while the shorter west tower reaches 49 stories and 574 feet. Both skyscrapers are connected via a 10-story podium that occupies most of the block bound by W Chicago Avenue, N State Street, W Superior Street, and N Dearborn Street. JDL is the developer of the 2.1 million-square-foot complex, having begun construction in 2019.

A Closer Look Inside JDL’s One Chicago Development in River North

Last week, Chicago YIMBY had the opportunity to tour JDL Development‘s two-tower megadevelopment known as One Chicago, located at the northeast corner of River North. At 2.1 million square feet, the mixed-use project will yield a combination of 55,000 square feet of office space, 812 residential units, restaurant and banquet space, and a new 65,000-square-foot Whole Foods at its base.
