Early details have been revealed for a new short-term lodging development at 5700 South Stony Island Avenue in Hyde Park. The project would sit on the intersection with East 57th Street directly across from the Museum of Science and Industry and Jackson Park, the former of which recently announced a brand-new front entrance.

The new six-story structure will be replacing an existing five-story apartment building on the site. The project will be a new location of The American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Hope Lodge, a network of facilities providing free accommodations to the over 200,000 cancer patients and caregivers who currently travel over 40 miles to receive treatment.

The new lodge would join 31 others across the nation. It will also collaborate with the University of Chicago Medicine, which is putting the final touches on its upcoming 575,000-square-foot AbbVie Foundation Cancer Pavilion, which is set to open next spring. The structure will be anchored by a one-story podium with covered parking that is capped by a rooftop deck.

While formal details haven’t been made readily available, Hope Lodges average around 35 rooms each. The Chicago outpost will also include a wellness and support hub with local resources. The ACS is working towards raising $82 million, of which $25 million was recently secured via a gift from the Duchossois family, who will receive naming rights.
At the moment, no timeline has been confirmed.

Is it reasonable to suggest that this facility be the base of a taller apartment tower? Hyde Park is prime for development and this is a park/lake facing site that could be desirable for a condominium tower – which would also help to finance the lodge facility.
The taller you go, the more expensive construction is. For what is effectively a charitable use, we can’t expect them to use a more expensive construction type.
That’s a fairly substantial apartment complex to be tearing down! Interesting how the economics of this works considering so much vacancy not far from Hyde Park.
Even Obama didn’t want to build his memorial in Washington Park.. the irony is perplexing for a man who espouses to lift up with his message of hope.

There needs to be a consistent effort to expand the green line to 63rd and Stoney Island. The area is prime for dense development and needs that final mile extension
