After months of foundation work beneath the surface, Power Construction’s progress on the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing and the College of Arts and Sciences at Loyola University has reached the first floor above ground. No longer visible on the construction site are mounds of sand and earth, and the cross-bracing steel tubes keeping the excavation walls in place. Although there is still a small window to peek at those on the site’s north end. Of course, there is still lots of concrete, concrete forms, and rebar as the main floor nears covering the foundation over completely.

Power got the permit for the caissons, foundation, and basement construction up to the framing of the first floor on January 30, a permit that came through the Chicago Data Portal with a reported cost of $11.2 million. On July 24, they got the big one, the permission to build out the entire six-floor building designed by Woodhouse Tinucci Architects. That permit, which allows construction of levels two through six for occupancies including business, assembly, and storage, cites a reported cost of $162 million. The third in the holy trinity of permits, for the tower crane, came through in March, and is the only permit assigned to the address of the demolished Campion Hall at 6551 North Sheridan Road. All other permits use the address of 1144 West Loyola Avenue on the school’s Rogers Park campus.

Once complete, the sciences building will deliver more than 200,000 square feet of usable space. Loyola plans to have it iopen in time for the Fall 2028 semester.
