Progress is starting to rise from below grade at Loyola University’s Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing and the College of Arts and Sciences building at 1144 West Loyola Avenue on the Rogers Park campus. Concrete walls and columns with protruding rebar, a solid sign that there will be more floors to come, are reaching up from beneath the surface, surrounded by a web of cross braces shoring up the perimeter walls.

Power Construction is the general and concrete contractor on this six-story build for Loyola, so it’s their handiwork everywhere you look. Our last visit to the site was near the end of May, when Power had just finished erecting the tower crane. The giant rust-colored braces were in at that point, but there was still a lot of excavation to be done before walls and concrete could go vertical. The sand is gone, but at the north end of the foundation, there remains a bit of soil to be removed.

Work permitted thus far includes the foundations we see and the first floor. The five upper levels will begin once the full permit comes through; it has been pending since January 16. A construction hoist was permitted on May 22, followed by a personnel hoist on the first of this month. The tower crane erected in May got its permit in March using the address of 6551 North Sheridan Road, the same address for Campion Hall, which was demolished last fall to make space for the new building.
Plans for the new facility, which will feature nearly 200,000 square feet of usable space over its seven levels, were created by Woodhouse Tinucci Architects. Loyola anticipates an opening in time for the Fall 2028 semester.

In Loyola’s words,
“The building will help address the increasing demand for health care and science professionals; the increased space will allow Loyola to grow its undergraduate nursing program from approximately 250 to 400 new students each year, resulting in 150 more future nurses entering the workforce annually.”
Faculty, staff, and students traveling from off campus can utilize the Loyola Red Line elevated platform just across the street. The CTA’s Route 147 and 155 buses make stops adjacent to the L, while the #36 Broadway and #136 Sheridan/LaSalle Express buses are available less than two blocks south at West Devon Avenue.
