An opening has been held for the new community hub Sankofa Village Wellness Center at 4301 West Madison Street in West Garfield Park. Sitting on the corner with South Kildare Avenue, the brand-new building replaces a long-term vacant lot just blocks from the area’s namesake park. The ribbon cutting marks an end to the years-long development of the project which broke ground in 2024.

Efforts for the project were led by The Community Builders along with the Garfield Park Rite to Wellness Collaborative. The three-story structure was designed by architecture firm Moody Nolan, with 60,000 square feet of space to provide locals with primary, dental, reproductive, behavioral, and other medical services.

On the lower levels of the building is a new outpost of the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago. This will offer drop-in childcare along with extensive fitness programs within the two-story gym on the upper levels. Additionally, Rush Medical Center, Erie Family Health, Equal Hope, and West Side United occupy offices on the rest of the upper levels.

The organization also plans to host pop-ups with community grocers to offer fresh foods and eventually help build out a permanent grocer, per Block Club. The center plans to serve 6,000 patients per year, having cost around $48 million to complete. In the future, the city hopes to build out additional housing and creative spaces within the area.

  1. Always nice to see investment along Madison St. It’s also good to have these kinds of uses come in earlier in the revitalization process while land is still less expensive.
