Shedd Aquarium assured their renovations would continue into the new year by scoring a another permit on January 2, this time to make alterations to the 4-D theater at the Oceanarium. The permit application date was December 16, and it was issued with a reported cost of $1,420,000. Valerio Dewalt Train is the architect if record, and Pepper Construction will provide general contracting services.

Here is the full Shedd Aquarium synopsis of the updated theater experience:

CHICAGO — Shedd Aquarium and SimEx-Iwerks announce the signing of the all-new Immersion Theater. This next generation 4D Experience® is designed to transport guests into the heart of the aquatic world through a fully reimagined, multi-sensory adventure. The Immersion Theater is set to open in spring 2026.

SimEx-Iwerks and Shedd Aquarium have partnered since 2006 to bring engaging, family-friendly 4D experiences to millions of visitors. This latest project marks a new chapter in their nearly two-decade collaboration, introducing advanced technology, stunning visuals, and choreographed multi-sensory effects that fully immerse guests in the wonders of the aquatic world.

“Shedd has been an extraordinary partner, and we are honored to carry on our long-term partnership,” said Sean McAllister, Senior Vice President, Attraction Development. “This new experience will surround guests with the sights, sounds, and sensations of the aquatic world aligning nicely with Shedd’s mission.”

The Immersion Theater features a newly designed pre-show space featuring dynamic lighting, large-scale underwater visuals, and interactive augmented reality animals that bring the oceans to life before the show even begins. Inside, the immersive theming continues with vibrant lighting and dynamic imagery not only on the main screen but also along the side walls, surrounding guests in motion and color.

The Immersion Theater introduces SimEx-Iwerks’ patented new seat design, which delivers special effects including wind, mist, and scent. The side walls and integrated floor lighting further enhance the atmosphere reflecting the mood and action of the show. Together, these elements create an unforgettable show for guests.

“Guests to Shedd Aquarium have shown that they crave an experience that educates by engaging their senses,” said Pat Fraser, Vice President of Guest Relations at Shedd Aquarium. “Our new theater will provide even more of those sensory moments, while mirroring improvements we have made across our building to make a visit to the aquarium truly dynamic and unforgettable.”

While Shedd continues to update facilities and experiences inside their Museum Campus building, work is ongoing on the exterior as well. One of Chicago’s two tower cranes (with the Thompson Center) assigned to renovation duties is still hard at work next to Monroe Harbor, with work expected to last into the fall. Photos of progress in the gallery below were captured on January 2.
