Foundation Work Continues As 626 South Wabash Erects Its Tower Crane

Clark Construction has erected their tower crane at 626 South Wabash in the South Loop, while construction of the new residential tower’s foundation continues. Progress is moving along quickly now, a stark contrast to the delay that saw the site sit idle after the caisson and full permits were issued back in 2022.

The city’s newest tower crane comes at an opportune time, as Chicago saw one removed from its skyline in mid-June when Adjustable Concrete took theirs down from the Aberdeen Crossing project on Grand Avenue in West Town.

Eighty of the tower’s 164 units are efficiencies, with 24 two-bedroom and 60 four-bedroom floor plans making up the remainder. The four-bedroom layouts will be marketed to students and co-living arrangements. A 64-space parking garage, storage for 100 bicycles, and 4,100 square feet of retail space are planned for the podium. A rooftop deck with a swimming pool is just one of the amenities planned for residents.

The long-vacant site roared to life in March, when equipment arrived on scene and began prep work for the 19-story, 164-unit apartment/co-living tower. Developers DAC Development and Melrose Ascension Capital scored a big financing victory in June, which should allow smooth sailing on the build through to completion. Antunovich Associates designed the tower, and Clark Construction is both the general and concrete contractor, having taken over the role by virtue os a special permit issued in January of this year.
