Construction is ongoing for a second-floor addition to the offices of the Laborers’ Local 1001 standalone building at 323 South Ashland Avenue on the Near West Side. The long, narrow, single-story building received a number of new permits last spring and summer. Vari Architects designed the new addition, with Harbor Country Development of Burr Ridge handling general contractor duties.

The first renovation/alteration permit was issued May 14 of last year, and called for the addition of office space on the second floor. That level didn’t exist yet, but the application to build it had been submitted on April 3, 2024. Next, permission was granted on July 15 , 2024 for interior demolition work on the ground floor. Finally, approval was granted on July 19 to add a second story atop the first floor.

Coincidentally, another union-affiliated building directly across Ashland Avenue has also seen activity, but of the opposite kind. A two-story office structure at 320 South Ashland, owned by Teamsters Local 705 on West Jackson Boulevard, received a demolition permit on January 7 of this year, and has since been razed. No word yet on what, if anything, will take its place.

The Local 1001 building is next to a surface parking lot with about 40 parking spaces, but is also close to a variety of public transit options. The Illinois Medical District Blue Line platform is located just over half a mile west, at Ogden Avenue and the Eisenhower Expressway. For bus travel, Route 9, X9, and 126 stops are within a one-block walk at Ashland and Van Buren Street. A two-block walk south past the Eisenhower leads to eastbound Route 7 buses at Harrison Street.
