Two permits were issued by the City of Chicago on January 2 to address damage caused by a fire at the Tapestry Fellowship Church in Irving Park. Located at 3824 West Irving Park Road, across from Independence Park, the fire occurred on the morning of December 22, 2023. It started in the cafe and damaged most of the building’s lower level and caused heavy smoke damage to the sanctuary above, according to a post on the church’s Facebook page the day after the fire.
An application was submitted on December 2 of last year for work on the interior, which was described in the Facebook post as needing “a full renovation.” A second permit application was requested on December 30 for roof repairs, possibly due to the Chicago Fire Department’s need to vent smoke out of the sanctuary. The two permits have a combined estimated cost of $65,000, and will be carried out by J & B Home Renovations for roof work and Graystar Construction for interior work.
The church building dates back to 1925, when it was built as the Second Swedish Methodist Church, and was designed by Benson & Brockhage. An etched stone nameplate over the main entrance on Irving Park Road still bears the original name, “Andra Svenska Metodist Kyrkan.”
Repairs are already underway. Congregants have been holding meetings at 4003 North Elston Avenue while they wait for the church to be inhabitable again.
