The glass curtain wall is being installed at the topped-out 220 North Ada residential tower on Chicago’s Near West Side. Thanksgiving week saw the first level of windows go up on the building as high-rise development continues to push its way further west in the West Loop. A tower crane permit issued last week indicates that construction could begin very soon just a couple blocks north at 400 North Elizabeth, while the 368-unit Flora apartment tower at 1114 West Carroll Avenue just opened in mid-October.

The tower topped out in November, and now glass installation adds to its list of milestones achieved. The first building permit, for caissons, was issued back on November 22 of last year. The foundation permit was issued next, on February 13, 2024, followed by the tower crane permit on March 5. General contractor Clayco then held a groundbreaking ceremony on March 12, and received their full building permit in June.

Designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, the 29-story, 314-foot-tall building will deliver 308 rental apartments. The unit breakdown includes studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom floor plans, plus nine penthouse apartments. Sixty-two units will be set aside as affordable. There will be 115 parking spaces in the tower’s podium, as well as storage for 58 bicycles. The ground floor will include about 12,000 square feet of retail space.

For east-west travel, the Route 20 bus runs along Madison Street about four blocks to the south, and the Route 65 bus is available to the north at Ogden and Grand Avenues not quite half a mile away.

  1. Include a routine category in your building reviews that rate the curtain wall’s ability to prevent or minimize bird strikes.

  2. The glass looks like the cheap wavy glass. Not impressed yet.
