A ribbon cutting has been held for the new plaza at the former Overton Elementary School at 221 E 49th Street in Grand Boulevard. Located on the intersection with S Indiana Avenue, the space is a part of the city’s Public Outdoor Plaza (POP!) initiative. The project was led by Borderless Studios, the city, and Ghian Foreman from the Washington Park Development Group.

Overton Elementary closed down in 2013 along with 49 other schools in the city, it was then purchased by Foreman who originally planned to build an apartment complex according to Block Club. However, efforts quickly pivoted towards preserving the building and converting it into a community center and hub.

The plaza itself is part of the greater project and is split into three different zones. The Indiana Gardens feature an accessible community garden space, The Lawn holds tables and seating for gatherings, and The Exchange Plaza contains a large-scale asphalt mural and various other art pieces by local artists including Amanda Williams.

The opening marks a major milestone for the Overton Community Hub, which hopes to open a gym and kitchen next. Once completed, it will contain additional spaces like a content creation studio and exchange marketplace with local vendors. The overall project will cost $17 million, having been awarded $5 million by the city in 2022.

While a formal timeline is unknown for the overall hub, the plaza is now open to the greater public.
