The Computer Design Research and Learning Center on the University of Illinois Chicago campus is nearing the completion of construction. Located at 900 W Taylor Street on the Near West Side, the new addition to the school’s computer science department is expected to open in 2024, though it is not yet known if it will be open by the time the fall semester begins.

Designed by a collaboration of Chicago firm Booth Hansen and Seattle-based LMN Architects, the new facility features an orange-and-white facade that adds a splash of color to the university’s brutalist architecture.

UIC and general contractor W.E. O’Neil broke ground on the building in July, 2021. The 135,000-square-foot facility, serving more than 2,000 students who are enrolled in the school’s computer science curriculum, consolidates and doubles the department’s capacity. It will contain 16,000 square feet of classroom space, 20+ labs including a robotics lab, event space, and even a geothermal farm to help with sustainable heating and cooling.
