Excavation work has begun for the upcoming Aldi grocery store at 3930 N Kilpatrick Avenue in Portage Park. Owned by Aldi Inc., the retail project entails a single-story structure spanning 21,000 square feet to occupy what was once a vacant lot.
The architectural plan by APD Engineering & Architecture features a curved entrance on the south side, wrapped in white fiber cement, metal, and masonry elements. This lighter design will visually complement the masonry palette of Clarendale Six Corners, a senior living facility that recently opened to the northwest.
A new parking lot with 70 spaces, including accessible options, will be situated on the property’s west side. For those relying on public transit, the store is located within walking distance of bus service for Routes 54, 54A, 56, and 80. The CTA L Blue Line is also reachable via a 16-minute walk to the Montrose Avenue station.
G.A. Johnson & Son has been contracted as the general contractor for the venture, with the initial drilling phase estimated to cost $2.2 million. The store is expected to open in 2024.
