Permits have been issued to remove an existing three-story multi-unit residential building at 1500 N Wieland Street in Old Town. NER Holdings is listed as the permit owner. New construction permits have been issued and plans have been revealed for a four-story, seven-unit elevator building at the site. The upcoming build will include a three-car garage and a five-foot-tall masonry screen wall. The building will have a brick composition.

Future residents will have access to CTA L via the Brown and Purple Lines at the Sedgwick station within a six-minute walk. There are a number of restaurants and retail options within the vicinity.

Precision Excavation is serving as the demolition contractor on this project. A timeline for the upcoming build has not yet been released, however, it will likely commence soon. The new construction was issued permitting in November of 2021 and will be commencing shortly after the removal of the existing structure.

  1. Sigh. In a city brimming with vacant lots.

  2. I’m all for increasing density, but out of all the buildings to stay, I’d hope they’d keep this beauty. Very sad.

  3. The other day, I saw the pro-union inflatable rat near a new construction site. I think that someone needs to have an inflatable Mr. Burns from the Simpsons that could be left in front of every beautiful historic home that is being replaced by multi-unit blah buildings. Stop being so greedy – Dang!

  4. Criminal…

  5. Disgusting. But at least the density is increasing, which should be a requirement to even consider demolition of prewar buildings.

  6. shouldnt be allowed to knock down a brick four(?) flat like this. Plenty of vacant lots, plenty of crappy frame buildings to do this on. But instead, another grey brick cookie cutter building on it’s way im guessing.

  7. This city has absolutely no regard for it’s history. So many undeveloped and underutilized lots in this city to allow for the complete disregard of our heritage.

  8. Another Kabul block to come, no doubt. Brick, big enclosed terraces, no base, no cornice, and storefront windows.

  9. come on Chicago, do better
