A new redevelopment at 839 W 79th Street in Auburn Gresham has been granted Tax Increment Financing (TIF). Led by the Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation (GAGDC), the project looks to redevelop an existing four-story structure and turn it into a mixed-use development that will serve the community. Located along W 79th Street, the building sits on an interior lot between S Green Street and S Peoria Street.
Designed by MKB Architects, the project looks to revitalize the existing building into 50,705 square feet of multi-tenant office space. Tenants will include a pharmacy, a health and wellness center offering imaging services like radiology, a community center for workforce development, GAGDC offices, and a sit-down restaurant offering vegan and vegetarian options. The structure will be topped with a green roof and include 36 parking spaces on the site.
The project will be receiving $2.1 million in TIF dollars, helping to cover the $15.7 million price tag. As per requirement for utilizing TIF money, the development will have multiple community benefits which include reviving a long vacant building, introducing UI Health, an anchor tenant that will provide health services to low and moderate income clients, and generating about 65 permanent full time jobs and 68 temporary construction jobs.
Permits for 839 W 79th Street have yet to be filed. No official timeline has been announced for the project.

This is great to see! And it’s along the CTA’s busiest bus line and only a couple blocks from the new Auburn Park Metra station.
