Recent photos show foundation and site work having progressed for University of Illinois Chicago‘s planned five-story computer science wing, known as the Computer Design Research And Learning Center. With work having commenced this past summer, the structure is set to replace a former parking lot at Little Italy‘s 900 W Taylor Street. This curvy addition will attach directly to the existing UIC Science and Engineering Labs building, while offering more than 135,00 square of new programming.
Specifically, the center will house 16,000 square feet of classrooms, 35 labs including a 1,200-square-foot robotics lab, a student affairs office, and an undergrad learning and community center. The focal point of the interior will be full-height atrium carved by the space between the old and existing structures. The design has been envisioned by Seattle-based LMN Architects alongside Chicago-based Booth Hansen, whose plans for the exterior architecture include a uniquely curvilinear frontage with a third-floor terrace. The unique facade palette is comprised of pre-cast concrete panels, terra cotta accents, metal panels and screening, and recessed windows.
Nearest CTA L service is accessible via a nine-minute walk north to the Blue Line at UIC-Halsted station. Meanwhile, anyone looking to board the Metra will find stations in the vicinity, the nearest of which is Halsted Street station via a 14-minute walk south. Bus service can be found for Route 157 at the adjacent 900 W Taylor stop. Other bus lines within a five-minute walk include Route 8 to the east at Halsted & Taylor, as well as Route 12 to the south at 900 W Roosevelt Road.
Tallying at a reported cost of just under $118 million, construction is being carried out by W.E. O’Neil Construction as general contractor. This latest addition to the UIC campus is expected to open in the summer of 2023.
