Construction has moved on from site prep to caisson work, as the residential building at 566 West Van Buren kicks into high gear. Gone is the surface parking lot that once held court here, replaced by Thatcher Foundations equipment drilling shafts into the West Loop soil.
Site prep got underway in mid-April on the lot, which until recently held more than just a surface parking lot. At 558 and 560 West Van Buren, a two-story and a three-story building that sat mid-block next to the alley were permitted for demolition in October 2022 and torn down in anticipation of redevelopment, but it took some time to get construction started. That delay is all but forgotten now.

Once home to about 100 parking spaces, the northeast corner of West Van Buren and South Jefferson Street will now park only 42 cars, while hosting 199 rental apartments. Residents will be able to park 199 bicycles here though. All three of the major permits are in place, including one for a tower crane, which we should see erected shortly after caisson work is complete. The only pending permit for the project now is a construction hoist, which hit the data portal on April 21.

The team at 566 West Van Buren includes developer Riverside Investment & Development, general contractor Clark Construction, concrete contractor Adjustable Concrete, and design architect Antunovich Associates. Riverside initially hoped to have units open to residents early in 2027. With the breaking of ground just underway, that timetable is likely to be pushed back.
