Habitat For Humanity received authorization from the City of Chicago earlier this month to erect two single-family homes on Chicago’s far west side. Identical permits came through on April 14 to build at 5308 and 5320 West Ferdinand Street in the Austin neighborhood. Each permit shows an application start date of January 27, and both include a reported cost of $320,000 apiece.

Canopy is named as the architect of record, just as they were for SFRs permitted a block away on North Lockwood Avenue last April, and Habitat For Humanity will perform their own construction. Each permit calls for a two-story residence and a two-car garage, with front metal fencing and side wood fencing enclosing the properties. Both parcels have been vacant for about a decade, so no demolition will be required before construction begins.

While there will be two garage spaces for each home, some residents may elect to walk a block east to Laramie Avenue, where they can access the north-south Route 57 CTA bus. For trips downtown, the Laramie Green Line elevated platform is less that three blocks southeast at Laramie and West Lake Street.

It would be interesting to see how many vacant lots have been filled over the past two decades. I wonder if the pace is slowing, steady,or gaining momentum.

    • Certainly, gaining by Lawndale, Woodlawn, and East Garfield Park standards.

Consistent for Bronzeville? Steady positive for Humboldt Park. Slow for Pilsen and Armour Square. Englewood and West Garfield could use some steam. Austin… some noise being made.

  2. I expected these to be two flats given Habitat’s focus on that typology in Chicago over the past decade. Like the new ones at 115th & Morgan.
