Demolition is in progress for the three buildings that formerly comprised the Leslie Hindman Auctioneers complex at West Lake and North Ada Streets in the West Loop. A site visit this week showed a pause on demo work as crews salvaged and palletized bricks. Lot of bricks.

No confirmation yet that new construction is imminent, but developer CedarSt received the blessing of the Committee on Design in January 2023 for a proposed residential tower, designed by Solomon Cordwell Buenz, that would deliver 271 residential units in a 28-story building. While a zoning application was filed back in fall 2022, no definitive timeline for the project’s construction and completion has ever been announced. At the time of this writing, there are no pending construction permits in the Chicago Data Portal in and around this block of Ada and Lake.

The three-story edifices at 1332 and 1338 West Lake, as well as the single-story extension on Ada Street extending north from lake Street to the alley, were all permitted for razing back in November. That Ada portion was the first to go, and progress has now eaten into the largest of the buildings, at the street corner.

That’s cool that they are salvaging the bricks. I do hope they build a nice residential tower there.
Chicago’s construction and demolition law requires a certain percentage of demo materials be recycled, But Chicago brick is also a hot commodity making it worth the effort to salvage it.
I hope this will be affordable housing for the people who already live on the west side.
