Demolition is underway on a two-story masonry building at 917 North Franklin Street on the Near North Side. That’s the site of Phase 2 of JDL Development’s North Union project, with plans to replace the building with a 12-story, 160-foot-tall residential structure.

A pair of demolition permits were issued for the property on August 28, with Heneghan Wrecking assigned to do the razing. A north and a south masonry building are noted in the demo permits, which may or may not include the two-story building next door at 919 North Franklin. That building was to be renovated for the North Union project, but it is also surrounded by demo fencing. Of course, demolition fencing is the same as construction fencing once you hang the laminated renovation permit at the site.

There are no pending permits in the Chicago Data Portal for either the new construction or the renovation, and no official word on Phase 2 will begin construction.

I like the design in the rendering. Nothing too flashy but it looks nice.
The rendering looks good! Glad to see some variation from boxy glass within the development.
