Construction has commenced on the new home of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church at 6248 S Stewart Avenue in Englewood. Located just north of the intersection with W 63rd Street, the new structure will provide the congregation with a new home after their historical church building burnt down in 2022 during maintenance work.

The original stone-clad building was erected in the 1880’s with its iconic red-turrets and neon sign, becoming home to Antioch in 1958. However right after Easter 2022, a propane torch being used for maintenance on the building’s wood roof set the church ablaze. It is worth noting this is the same accident that burnt down the historic Pilgrim Baptist Church.

Now after a two-year funding campaign, the church held a groundbreaking ceremony on their new four-story structure connected to their existing community building next door. Designed by Indiana based architects HCO Inc., the building will hold a new multi-story auditorium as well as new spaces for their youth programs.

The work will include renovations to the building next door and the integration of a few salvaged pieces from the original church. Plans call for a new gym, computer lab, wellness center, classrooms, and other teen-specific spaces. With an overall cost of $16 million, the building should be completed in 12-18 months.

  1. Rebuild the original church as it was. The design was dignified. The new design looks like a car wash.

    • I’m sure if you were willing to provide the funding for it, your suggestion will get the consideration it deserves.

  2. Strange how “Commences” is replacing “starts”.

  3. The destruction of the historic church was of course tragic…but HCO’s monumental design for the new church is excellent!

  4. I can’t help but wonder if it would have made more sense to use an existing building. So many church buildings are underutilized due to declining attendance.
