Plans have been revealed for a new mixed-use development at 600 S Homan Avenue in Homan Square. Sitting on the intersection with W Harrison Street and adjacent to the Eisenhower/I-290, the project will replace a long-time vacant lot. The Foundation for Homan Square is the developer behind the proposal with local-fim Latent Design working on its plans.

The Foundation for Homan Square was founded in 1995 to help oversee the redevelopment of the original Sears headquarters. In 1988 the Sear chairman approached developers for the redevelopment, which included the demolition of the largest wood-frame structure in the world, the Sears Catalog Facility. Since then the foundation has begun working on its own projects.

The proposal dubbed the ‘Homan-Harrison Gateway’, will rise three-stories and nearly 40-feet in height. Inside the building will function as a financial empowerment community center with office space and a cafe on the ground floor. Above that the remaining two will be split between further office space and co-working areas, all to be used for local businesses.

Users will also have access to a rooftop deck, terraces, and a small central courtyard. The exterior will utilize a gradient of bright-red metal panels for its facade, similar to the earlier phases of this project which saw 21-residential units spread across three nearby sites designed by JGMA. The project hopes to break ground soon and be completed by the spring of 2026.
