Renovation efforts continue at the John B. Murphy Memorial Auditorium building, situated at 50 E Erie Street in River North. The six-story structure, recognized for its French Renaissance-style designed by Marshall and Fox, was erected in 1926 for the American College of Surgeons. Featuring a three-story theater space, the building is adjacent to the Driehaus Museum and near the intersection of E Erie Street and N Wabash Avenue.
Antunovich Associates has worked alongside Bulley & Andrews for the design and engineering behind the renovation. The work focuses on interior refurbishments while preserving the historic exterior with necessary repairs. A significant aspect of the renovation includes transforming 32,000 square feet of previous office space into a modern educational facility. This new facility will house art and maker studios, classrooms, a library, archives, office spaces, seminar rooms, and an 800-square-foot outdoor terrace on the top floor.
The auditorium, historically used for training and events, is also being restored to its original condition with improved acoustics. The Driehaus Museum, which took ownership of the adjacent Nickerson Mansion in 2003 and the auditorium in 2022, is continuing operations during the renovation.
Having commenced last June, the renovation includes the installation of new sidewalk covers around the auditorium. The project is expected to be completed by this coming February.
