Construction is progressing for the redevelopment of an existing church and a new addition at 1101 Church Street in Evanston. Developed as a joint venture partnership by Bob Ranquist, John Searls, and Chris Dillion, the 30-unit project incorporates the existing Sojourner Covenant Church, which was built in 1911 and closed in 2018. Philadelphia-based ISA is the architect behind the plan, which has been dubbed “Lodge Evanston.”

The adaptive reuse of the church will yield seven multi-floor apartments. Adjacently north will be a new 23-unit building that incorporates a metallic facade design with angular cutouts and setbacks. This ground-up part of the construction stands five stories and 49 feet, offering a rooftop deck and enclosure on the fifth level.

Floor plan sizes vary from one-bedroom, one-bathroom layouts up to three-bedroom, two-bathroom configurations. According to an article by Evanston Now, the rents will cost between $1,500 and $3,800. Parking will offer eight on-site spaces, while the developers have sought additional off-site parking spaces for lease.

  1. This building would have been so much better in brick, and, fit the context of what Evanston is about….

    • Often times, when you’re dealing with historic buildings, it’s considered preferable to make a distinction between the old and the new. If the new part blends in too much with the old, it can detract from the historic nature of the historic building.

      • I would agree, but, Evanston is a stately town with a wonderful historic heritage where buildings speak to each other, and, the selection of material is more like an Arlington Heights warehouse than a Lakefront District residence.
There have been a few “homes” built in Evanston over the last 20 years that just don’t understand what Evanston is about – more like airplane crashes than houses.

  2. What an unusual church structure! At first I assumed the church exterior had been striped down (either over the years or during the conversation). But I found a local Evanston news article that explains the renovated church looks much more like it did back in 1910.

This was my family church. My great great grandfather helped build it. It held a lot of memories. My parents got married there, I got baptized there. I understand change is needed but this is a little unnecessary!
