A construction permit has been greenlit for outdoor upgrades to the Benjamin E. Mays Elementary Academy at 6656 S Normal Boulevard in Englewood. The project, owned by the city, is expected to provide an array of exterior improvements including a new play lot, artificial turf field, stormwater management, and additional landscaping.

The listed architect of record for the project is HGA, although the specific design details such as the layout of the play lot or the materials to be used for landscaping have not been revealed.

No new parking will be added within the current scope. As for public transit access, the school is located within walking distance of bus Routes 8, 24, 63, and 67. The nearest CTA L station is the Green Line’s Halsted station, a 16-minute walk northwest. Next closest service is the Red Line’s 63rd St Station, an 18-minute walk northeast.

The general contractor for the project is F.H. Paschen, with a reported cost of $1,550,000. An estimated completion date for the upgrades has not yet been publicly announced.
