The University of Illinois Chicago’s new Computer Design Research and Learning Center continues to make significant progress, with its steel frame now at full height. Located at 900 W Taylor Street near the southern end of the main campus in Little Italy, the five-story addition will be adjacent to the existing Science and Engineering Labs building.

The university is overseeing the development, which will provide 135,000 square feet of programming, including state-of-the-art classrooms and facilities. The center will have 16,000 square feet of classrooms, 35 labs, a student affairs office, and other spaces, such as a full-height atrium contained between the new structure and the existing engineering building. Additionally, there will be a 1,200-square-foot robotics lab and an open-air amenity terrace on the third level.

Designed by Booth Hansen and LMN Architects, the structure has a flowing curvilinear exterior that includes recessed windows with precast concrete, metal paneling, and terra cotta accents. The massing is set back to allow for the open-air terrace.
