Permits were issued yesterday for a new three-story residential building at 855 N Paulina Street in West Town. The lot is currently occupied by a two-story masonry residence. The permit owner is listed as The Alverna Group, LLC and plans indicate that the scope of the project will include three total units, a basement level, a rooftop deck with an enclosed staircase, and a detached three-car garage with its own rooftop deck.

Ronald Vari is the architect of record. As of now, no drawings or renderings have been posted, however, the filing’s two masonry contractors suggest the building will involve a brick exterior.

Future residents will have CTA L access for the Blue Line at Chicago station via a 16-minute walk east. The nearest bus service is Route 66 and can be accessed via a two-minute walk south at the Chicago & Paulina stop. Those looking to enjoy dining and retail options can find a plethora of offerings along nearby Ashland and Chicago Avenues.

Desmond Builders is acting as the general contractor behind the reportedly $390,000 construction. A timeline or completion date for the project has not yet been released.

  1. Oh, Come ON! Stop with the destroying of all of our architectural history. Even the more modest types need to be protected or the entire character of the city will be lost forever. There’s nothing wrong with this house. It looks to be in very good repair.

    • 100% agree with Beth. This is sad.

We will wish we hadn’t scrapped all of these beautiful homes/structures with character to cheaply build a plain run-of-the-mill “looks like everything else” building someday. 🙁

The dollars are speaking, but truly sad.
