Exterior construction work is entering its final act at the UI Health Outpatient Surgery Center & Specialty Clinics building in the Illinois Medical District. This new six-story edifice has replaced a former vacant lot situated just south of the hospital’s main building at the address of 1009 S Wood Street.

As the latest addition to University of Illinois Chicago’s medical campus, the outpatient and surgery center will provide more than 200,000 square feet of programming dedicated to both outpatient surgery and clinical care. There will be a total of eight operating rooms and eight procedure rooms, pharmacy services, as well as exam rooms for the gastroenterology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, transplant, and urology specialties. Given its learning hospital classification, the interior scheme has also been designed with UI Health’s educational component in mind.

The building’s architecture is a collaboration between Shive Hattery and ZGF. One of the most notable aspects of the design is its facade, arranged as vertical lines made up of glass and concrete. Some of these column-like elements tilt slightly, while varying in width to allow for fine-tuning the natural light. Other design features include a prominent angular overhang along the north and west frontage, as well as a two-story glass skybridge connecting the new development to the main building.

Transit-wise, the closest bus service can be found for Route 157, available via a two-minute walk east to the intersection of Taylor & Paulina. Also within walking distance are more stops for Routes 7, 9, X9, and 50. Anyone traveling via the CTA L will find nearest Pink Line trains at Polk Station, located a five-minute walk northeast. Next closest L trains can be found for the Blue Line at the Illinois Medical District station, a 14-minute walk northwest.

Reported to cost $194 million, the project is being built by Pepper Construction Company alongside Brown & Momen Construction. A target completion date is set for fall 2022.
