Structural Work Reaches Full Height for UI Health Outpatient Surgery Center In Illinois Medical District

Construction has topped out at six floors for University of Illinois’ Outpatient Surgery Center & Specialty Clinics, located in the Illinois Medical District.

Stretching 200,000 square feet, the facility will offer programming related to surgery, education, and research. More specifically, the building will be equipped with eight operating rooms, eight procedure rooms, and clinic space divided between Gastroenterology, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Transplant, Urology, Pharmacy Services.

Co-designed by Shive Hattery and ZGF, the structure will be wrapped in a mix of textured cement panels and a glass curtain wall. The facade will incorporate additional angled setbacks and variable spacing between panels to further add to the design. A second- and third-floor skybridge also connect the north-facing side of the building to the main hospital building.

Nearby bus transit will consist of stops for Route 157, available via a two-minute walk east to the intersection of Taylor & Paulina. Other stops can be found for Routes 9 & X9 via a four-minute walk east, Route 7 via a four-minute walk north, and Route 50 via a six-minute walk west. The CTA L is also readily accessible, with the Pink Line at Polk station via a five-minute walk northeast. The Blue Line also lies within walking distance, with the Illinois Medical District station located 15 minutes to the northwest.

Given the project’s central location in the Illinois Medical District, a host of other medical centers can be found within the vicinity, such as Rush University Medical Center to the north, John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County Health to the northwest, and Jesse Brown VA Medical Center to the west.

FH Paschen is the general contractor for the $194 million construction, which includes the outpatient center and a new welcome atrium across Taylor Street. Roughly 5 percent of this construction cost stems from a gift by Bruno and Sallie Pasquinelli. A full completion and opening is slated for the fall of 2022.
