Renovation permits have been issued for an existing church building that lies on the premises of the Great Lakes Academy charter school, located at 8401 S Saginaw Avenue in South Chicago. As the occupying owner, Great Lakes Academy plans to convert the 17,000-square-foot structure and its 15,000-square-foot basement to a gymnasium, cafeteria, and full-service kitchen. The issued permit also indicates a new single-story, 4,000-square-foot structure, as well as a partial renovation of the existing school building.
Lawrence P. Kearns of Wheeler Kearns Architects is the architect of record. No renderings of the renovations or addition have yet been revealed.
Nearest bus transit within the school’s vicinity includes east and westbound stops for Route 87, located an eight-minute walk south to 87th Street & Colfax. Other nearby buses include Routes 5, 26, 71, and 95 lines to the east, as well as Route 30 to the southwest. While the nearest CTA L service is a 75-minute walk west to the Red Line’s 79th station, the Metra’s 83rd Street station can be found via a 12-minute walk to the northeast.
Multiple outdoor areas can be found within close proximity, including Eckersall Stadium, Eckersall Playground Park, Essex Park, and Russell Square Park.
Bulley & Andrews LLC is listed as general contractor for the $9 million project. A full completion timeline is not yet known.
