Foundation work is complete for a three-story high school at 5437 W 64th Place in the Clearing neighborhood of Chicago. Permits were issued in May this year, and now steel rebar and concrete blocks can be seen forming the columns and exterior walls of the structure.
The permit lists the City of Chicago as the developer, and Christopher Thomas as the architect of record. UrbanWorks, Ltd. has also been reported to be involved. According to ALL Construction Group, the contracting firm acting as an engineering consultant for the project, the school will be called John Hancock College Preparatory High School and is projected to cost $90 million.
The most recent renderings by UrbanWorks call for a modern brick facade, and the use of multi-colored vertical panels used for both its windows and accenting architectural elements. Additionally, renderings show a spacious interior that provides ample gathering and study spaces for students.
The suburban lot sits just south of Midway International Airport and is adjacent to W 65th Street, which acts as the dividing line between Chicago and Bedford Falls. Spanning east and west, the adjacent 165 bus route has a stop at 65th Street & Linder, which is at the southwest corner of the property. The north/south 55A bus route is a 15-minute walk west to the S Austin Avenue stop. The nearest CTA L station is a 35-minute walk to the Midway CTA station at the end of the Orange Line.
Programming details for the project including space for a gymnasium with a stage, a black box theater and several multipurpose classrooms for CTE, STEM, and STEAM, yielding a total of 179,600 square feet.
A completion date has been indicated for 2021 on the architects’ website.
