It was the third of September, a day they’ll always remember at the First Romanian Baptist Church in Lincoln Park, because that was the day a permit came through to demolish the frame church building at 2622 North Ashland Avenue. Pending for 69 days since its application start date of June 26, the permit came through with a reported cost of $20,000. Carlos Group Inc is named as the demo contractor.

A new construction permit awaits in the Chicago Data Portal for a masonry four-story plus basement, five-unit residential building from Nomis Construction, Inc. of Lincolnwood, who are acting as both developer and general contractor. Eduard Livanu is named as the architect of record. Plans are to include an occupiable rooftop with access stairs, rear patios, and a detached five-car garage with a rooftop deck of its own. A sixth parking space will be provided on a concrete slab.
According to the First Romanian website, the congregation occupied the Ashland Avenue church from 1923 until announcing their relocation to Des Plaines in July of this year. The property appeared before the Zoning Board of Appeals in May, when an approval was granted to allow dwelling units below the second floor. That application still showed the church as the property owner, with Nomis shown as the applicant. But sales information of the site has proven elusive.

2624 North Ashland is just north of Wrightwood Park and next to Prescott Elementary School at the intersection of Ashland and Wrightwood Avenues. Residents of the new units will find stops for the CTA’s Route 9 bus at that junction. Ashland Express (X9) buses are available two blocks north at West Diversey and two blocks south at West Fullerton, where #76 and #74 buses run eastbound and westbound. Those buses can be used to connect with elevated trains at the Diversey and Fullerton platforms. Additional rail travel is available three-quarters of a mile south just off Ashland via Metra’s Clybourn UP-N and UP-W station.
