A groundbreaking has been held for the upcoming Advocate Trinity Hospital at 8000 South Lake Shore Drive on the northern end of the future Quantum Park. The large vacant site sits on the corner with South Brandon Avenue, with the hospital structure occupying the eastern portion of the land. Efforts are being led by Advocate Health along with CannonDesign.

The building will rise five stories tall and build out 183,000 square feet of space, including a two-floor, widespread podium. Surrounding this will be 368 parking spaces, a garden for visitors and patients, and a large amount of empty land for a future expansion. The hospital will be replacing the existing Advocate Trinity location not too far away.

Inside said podium, there will be a large industrial kitchen, dining room, 16-bed emergency room, dialysis unit, three operating rooms, GI lab, catheterization lab, observation unit, ICU, and imaging center. The next three floors will rise within a small tower that will cap out at 97 feet in height, containing 36 additional beds.

Clad in a swooping metal-and-glass facade, the $300 million property will help modernize healthcare access to the neighborhood, though it represents a decrease in the total number of hospital beds on offer. With construction now underway, the new hospital hopes to open its doors in June 2029, when the former facility would begin to shut down.

A hospital is always welcomed and needed; unfortunately, that’s a lot of parking space on a prime south side location.
