Facade work for the five-story Rush Specialty Hospital at 516 S Loomis Street in the Little Italy neighborhood is nearing completion. This new facility represents a partnership between the Rush University System and Select Medical. Located on the same block as the Joan and Paul Rubschlager building that opened earlier this year, the hospital is complemented by an adjacent third plot, which offers potential for a building spanning up to 855,000 square feet.

Programming within the new Rush Specialty Hospital covers an area of 135,000 square feet and focuses mainly on inpatient acute care. The hospital is set to feature 56 beds for comprehensive rehabilitation and an additional 44 beds designated for long-term acute care. The building will also provide dining and lounge spaces to accommodate patients, staff, and visitors.

The architectural design of the building is by GWG3 Architecture and features a white aluminum composite and glass exterior. The roof height measures 77 feet, while the full height to the top of the parapet is 93 feet.

In terms of transportation, the site incorporates 70 surface parking spaces and is located just to the south of the I-90 expressway. Public transit options include a bus stop for Route 7 at Harrison & Loomis at the southeast corner of the site, while the CTA Blue Line can be found at Racine station via a two-minute walk north.

Power Construction served as the general contractor for the $110 million facility. A full completion is expected for early next year.

It’s actually located south of the Eisenhower (I-290)
Suburban sprawl in the heart of Chicago what an embarrassment.
Rush needs to prioritize it’s spending. There are parts of the hospital (ie, the clinical labs and other areas) that are literally 75 years old and crumbling and the entire campus smells of sewage. But rather than update these much needed areas, they spend millions on advertising and keep building towers left and right only to try and compete with UofC and Northwestern. News flash Rush, you’re not them nor never will be so stop trying to act like you’re on par with them.
