The first renovation permit has been issued for the old Engine Company 84, Truck 51 firehouse at 6204 S Green Street in Englewood. The rehabilitation is the first phase of a 4.28-acre culinary hub and event center oriented around healthy living, led by developer Englewood Connect LLC and designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.
The restoration will convert the building into a large event space with a commercial kitchen, and plans for the project include a large indoor/outdoor food market and other innovative spaces. While full details of the interior work were not disclosed, a rough look at a floor plan shows a new kitchen, new lavatories, a new elevator for accessibility, and various large event spaces. The exterior work will preserve the chimney and existing windows, replace any as needed to match the originals, and add two new accessible entrances with new doors and terracotta detailing at the base of two front towers.
The south side of the building will see the most significant changes, including a new enclosed secondary exit stair and two new outdoor decks on top of existing flat roofs on the north and south sides with new railing that will be as hidden from view as possible. Englewood Connect plans on financing the project using Tax Increment Financing (TIF) and the Neighborhood Opportunity Fund.
The project was one of the first winners of the Invest South/West program, which aims to revitalize underserved neighborhoods. Bowa Construction is serving as the general contractor, with completion for this first phase targeted for around the end of next year.
