Chicago is gaining a new museum in Avondale called the Insect Asylum. This unique concept is described on their Instagram page by its founder, Nina Salem as “an artistic display of over 24,000 taxidermy insects ranging from 1910- 2022.” Salem has been amassing this collection and showing it around Chicago at various pop-ups and events for roughly five years. The collection is almost entirely vintage and has been ethically sourced by Salem herself in conjunction with entomologist as well as member donations.

The Insect Asylum has found a home at 2870 N. Milwaukee Avenue. The storefront has been vacant for over a year and the museum will be a welcome addition to the neighborhood. The front of the lofted space will house the bulk of Salem’s collection while the lower level is being transformed into a taxidermy space where Salem’s partner will operate a small shop.
The goal of the space is to be an informative and fun experience for all ages. On the website, Salem is quoted as saying “my main goal is to bring a bit of the outside world into our magical space and create something of a sanctuary in the city.” The buildout is nearing completion with a projected opening date on April 22nd, Earth Day, after which point neighbors will be able to view the collection and even take an informative class.
